"I TOOK A TRAIN ACROSS THE ATLANTIC"

It's Oscar time and you know what that means -- more hectoring movie stars on the red carpet admonishing us to:
...and more, but I haven't had a haircut in six weeks so I'm a little bit behind on my celebrity moralizing thanks to my barbershop's -- sorry-- hairstylist's copies of People Magazine.

Hollywood celebrities are famously infamous for their hypocritical scolding of the hoi polloi, such as "Rock the Vote" musicians Madonna and Lenny Kravits, who may rock but don't actually vote.

Personally, I do not find hypocrisy to be the worst of sins. Our condemnation of any particular act of hypocrisy needs to be tempered by the worthiness of the ideal that is being transgressed, the particulars of the event, the honest contriteness of the transgressor, and an understanding of the truth about human nature -- because, let's face it, at times we all fall short of our ideals.

But when the worthiness of the ideal is in question (man-made Global Warming), and the particular event is egregious (Al Gore's home using 20 times more electricity than the average American home) and the honest contriteness of the transgressor is in doubt (a ten percent increase in electrical usage the following year), then let the mocking begin. Especially when the "celebrity" is a politician who wants to -- under penalty of law -- force everyone to do as he says and not as he does.

Leonardo DiCaprio is a celebrity and not a politician. However, his campaigning on behalf of Global Warming is having an impact on our lifestyle, our pocketbooks and our very Liberty, now that Obama and the Democrats in power.

Here is what the President has in store for us, taken from CNN.

President Barack Obama's climate czar said Sunday the Environmental Protection Agency will soon issue a rule on the regulation of carbon dioxide, finding that it represents a danger to the public....

Officially recognizing that carbon dioxide is a danger to the public would trigger regulation of the greenhouse gas emissions from coal-fired power plants, refineries, chemical plants, cement firms, vehicles and any other emitting sectors across the economy.

Industry fears it could shut down the economy, not only preventing plants from operating and spurring a dramatic retooling of the energy sector but also pushing up costs and hurting the international competitiveness for a raft of sectors.

Nearly every citizen will feel the effect of this obvious and brazen grab for power over the nation's industries by the eco-fascists of the Obama administration and their cheerleaders, like DiCaprio. The economy as a whole will suffer, and we will suffer along with it. But more than that, the Global Warming hysteria will reach into the lives of each one of us individually, all in the name of regulating carbon-dioxide.

Nearly everything we do in the course of a day emits carbon dioxide. Every time we flick on a light switch, power up our computer, turn on the air conditioner or heater, travel in our car, or burn a log in our fireplace, we produce CO2 and contribute, in the minds of the regulators, to environmental disaster .

The eco-fascists will not be content with regulating industry. They will reach into your homes and personal lives, too. They will attempt to control your thermostat, control your fireplace, control your driving and anything else they can think of to assert their dominance over your life, because their cause is more important than your Liberty.

However, if you are wealthy enough, powerful enough or famous enough, the regulatory rules will not have the same impact on your Liberty.

Which brings us back to Leo.

Like all Hollywood hypocrites, the rules do not apply to him -- and they never will, no matter what laws are passed. DiCaprio, with his celebrity loudspeaker and boyishly-handsome handsome boyishness, has been trying to influence government policy on Global Warming for many years now. But for just as many years, his own personal policy towards Global Warming remains unchanged in any meaningful way.

In a rare occasion, DiCaprio was questioned about his own personal commitment to reducing CO2 emissions. It happened in a setting where, usually, only lap-dog journalists are allowed access to the Hollywood elite. Amazingly, one of the lap-dogs started yapping at DiCaprio's ankles, and Leo didn't like it. Not one bit:

Leonardo DiCaprio hit back at accusations of hypocrisy as he unveiled an eco-documentary he wrote, produced and narrated at the Cannes film festival.

Asked after the premiere of The 11th Hour whether he had taken a fuel-guzzling jet on his way to the French Riviera, the Titanic star spat back sarcastically "No, I took a train across the Atlantic".

When the British journalist followed up, saying that many stars used emission-heavy private jets while touting environmental protection, a testy DiCaprio countered that he had taken a commercial flight from New York.

"I try to travel commercial as much as I can," he said.

"I try to travel commercial as much as I can."

That's a good one.

Yeah, Leo, me too. Of course, I don't have access to private jets, so I kind of have to travel commercial. And that still leaves open the question of exactly how often you do travel by private jet. I noticed you didn't say never. Or seldom. Or frequently. Or anytime one is offered you.

And I won't be jetting off to Cannes this year -- or any of the other film locations, movie festivals, publicity tours, vacation hideaways and romantic trysts that your peripatetic career will take you in the coming months. You know like, atop a glacier in Iceland for a Vanity Fair covershoot.

Apparently, the trains stop in Iceland, too.

Yeah -- no unnecessary global-warming CO2 emissions spewed to achieve that shot, huh? Unless you include the popped collar which is hot baby!

But Leo had a bit more to say at the press conference. By way of justification, DiCaprio suggests that, gosh darn it, some people just can't be held to the same CO2 standards as, you know, you. As case in point, he offers a Global Village Idiot Blog favorite -- Al Gore.

DiCaprio later came back to the reporter, saying that he was irritated with the media for going after prominent environmentalists such as former US vice-president Al Gore (whose own film on global warming An Inconvenient Truth picked up an Oscar this year) for supposed inconsistency in their private lives.

"We're all trying the best we can, truly, we really are," he said. ...

"This person [Gore] is truly trying to relay a message to the public and the way he travels and the way he leads his life should not be splayed out like that."

He's using Al Gore's name, but what he's really saying is "Leonardo DiCaprio is truly trying to relay a message to the public, and the way Leonardo DiCaprio travels and the way Leonardo DiCaprio leads his life should not be splayed out like that."

Leonardo -- King of the World!

You know, back in the 60s, guys like DiCaprio were called part of the "Jet Set." Well, they still are. And all the Global Warming rules and regulations will not crimp their jet-setting, mansion warming, limousine-riding style in the least. Their wealth, their celebrity, their hectoring earnestness will insulate them, keeping them nice and toasty warm while you and I are left out in the cold of our Jimmy-Carterized 68 degree homes and apartments this winter.

At least Carter had the decency to wear a sweater, unlike some Presidents I know.

Oh, and, Leo? Polar Bears do not reside in Iceland...and when they do, they are shot.

Well said. You have mocked to your heart’s content and brought us some astonishing news. Here I was thinking Leonardo was as much for the cause and doing his bit as the woman saving the planet one bag at a time. I read that interview and it was straight over my head that it means he does occasionally travel on a private jet.
